Understanding Sever’s Disease: Causes, Symptoms & Effective Treatment at Dynamic Podiatry
Sever’s Disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a common cause of heel pain in active children and adolescents. It occurs when the growth plate in the heel becomes inflamed due to repetitive stress, often linked to sports and physical activity during growth spurts.
What is Sever’s Disease?
Sever’s Disease affects the growth plate (apophysis) at the back of the heel bone (calcaneus). This condition is most common between ages 8 and 14, particularly in children who are physically active and involved in running, jumping, or sports with sudden movements.
Causes of Sever’s Disease
The primary cause of Sever’s Disease is repetitive strain and overuse. Factors that increase the risk include:
- Rapid growth during puberty causing tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon
- High-impact activities like soccer, basketball, or gymnastics
- Poor footwear without adequate heel support or cushioning
- Biomechanical issues such as flat feet or overpronation
