At Dynamic Podiatry, we offer expert assessment and personalised treatment plans to help manage symptoms, support growth, and get young patients back to doing what they love—without pain.
What Is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?
Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) is a growth-related overuse injury of the knee. It occurs when the patellar tendon pulls on the growth plate at the tibial tuberosity (just below the kneecap), leading to pain, swelling, and a visible bump on the shin.
It’s most commonly seen in active boys and girls aged 10 to 15 years, especially those participating in sports involving running, jumping, and quick changes of direction such as football, netball, basketball, and athletics.
Symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease
- Pain just below the kneecap, especially during or after activity
- Swelling or a noticeable lump at the top of the shinbone
- Tenderness when kneeling or pressing on the area
- Tightness in the quadriceps or hamstrings
- Increased pain with running, jumping, or climbing stairs
